Akbayan proclaimed winner in 2022 party-list polls

MANILA, Philippines — Eight months before the 2025 midterm elections, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has proclaimed Akbayan party-list as among the winners in the 2022 polls.

In a resolution dated Sept. 25, the Comelec proclaimed Percival Cendaña as Akbayan party-list representative in the 19th Congress.

“After due deliberations, the commission resolved to adopt the recommendation of the Law Department to proclaim Akbayan as winner in the last elections,” the resolution read.

Cendaña’s term will end on June 30, 2025.

After obtaining the required percentage of votes under the party-list system, the Comelec said Akbayan’s qualified nominee is entitled to sit as a sectoral representative.

The Comelec issued the certificate of proclamation to Akbayan after the Supreme Court upheld the cancellation of the registration of An Waray party-list, leaving one House seat vacant.

Labor coalition Nagkaisa welcomed the proclamation of Akbayan party-list by the Comelec.

Meanwhile, Comelec Chairman George Garcia said they are finalizing the list of party-lists accredited to participate in the May 2025 elections.

Garcia said 166 party-list groups are vying for 63 seats, comprising 20 percent of House members.

Of the number, 42 are newly accredited organizations.
