BI: Chinese ‘spies’ lived in Philippines for decades

MANILA, Philippines — The alleged foreign spies recently captured by authorities have lived in the Philippines for decades and have embedded themselves in society, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said yesterday.

In a statement, BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said that the bureau recently checked the records of these suspected spies, and discovered that they have all been here for decades.

“Some have been here as early as 2002,” Viado said.

“They have been holding legal statuses, and have lived in the country for a long time before they were found to be doing suspicious activities by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP),” he added.

Without providing too much detail, the BI chief said that some of those arrested had working visas linked to companies in San Juan and Manila, while others were married to Filipinas.

Last Jan. 17, the NBI apprehended Chinese national Yuanqing Deng outside a condominium in Makati City. He is suspected to be a “sleeper agent” who has allegedly been conducting espionage activities in critical infrastructure, specifically military camps, Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement sites, local government offices, power plants, stations and shopping malls located in Luzon.

Recently, it was also reported that the NBI arrested five alleged Chinese spies who were purportedly monitoring activities of the Philippine Coast Guard and the Philippine Navy in Palawan.

Viado said the BI is closely working with the Department of Justice, NBI and the AFP to gather more information about the suspects.

He also urged the public to immediately report to the authorities any suspicious activities of foreign nationals that might be detrimental to national security.

“We are serious in our efforts to stop these undesirable aliens from abusing our hospitality,” he added.
