Depilo rolls, dispatches Arbole

STA. ROSA, Laguna , Philippines – Rico Depilo continued his inspiring run at the ICTSI The Country Club Match Play Invitational, dominating 17th-seed Art Arbole, 6&4, to secure his spot in the quarterfinals of the P2 million event at the TCC course yesterday.

Depilo, a 52-year-old veteran from Davao, displayed unwavering composure following his shocking win over top seed Tony Lascuña in Day 1.

“Naka-tsamba lang uli,” he said. His next challenge will be 18-year-old Hyun Ho Rho, who edged Eric Gallardo, 3&1.

A former PGT Q-School topnotcher, Rho emerged as the highest-ranked player remaining in the competition after the surprising eliminations of third-seeded Reymon Jaraula and No. 6 Jhonnel Ababa.

Japan’s Kakeru Ozeki eliminated Jaraula, 3&2, while Albin Engino ousted Ababa, 3&1.

Multi-titled Jay Bayron (ranked 18th) cruised to a 7&6 win over Elee Bisera, who shocked No. 2 Angelo Que on the 19th hole Tuesday.

In women’s play, the rest of the favorites held ground after an upset-laden opening round.

Daniella Uy followed up her Round of 16 win over Apple Fudolin with a commanding 7&6 victory over Kayla Nocum, setting up an intriguing semifinal clash with fifth seed Florence Bisera, 4&3 winner over Rev Alcantara.

Bisera is the highest-ranked player left in the draw.
