Laguna’s Majayjay Church named minor basilica

MANILA, Philippines — Pope Francis has designated the St. Gregory the Great Parish in Majayjay town in Laguna as a minor basilica.

The CBCP News, the official news service provider of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, said the parish, commonly known as Majayjay Church, is the first in the Diocese of San Pablo to receive the honor.

The Vatican granted the designation in a decree issued on Jan. 25, following a petition submitted by the diocese in December.

Bishop Marcelino Antonio Maralit Jr. welcomed and described the designation as a “wonderful blessing,” that came during the Jubilee Year of Hope.

The CBCP News said that minor basilicas are chosen for their historical significance, architectural value and role as centers of worship.

According to the 1989 document, Domus ecclesiae, a basilica must stand out as a center of active and pastoral liturgy.

“It must set an example for others in the dignified celebration of sacraments and devotions,” the document said.

The Majayjay Church, founded in 1576, served as a refuge for Franciscan missionaries seeking relief from illnesses.

The church, which was built in its present form between 1616 and 1649, has undergone several reconstructions after sustaining damage from three fire incidents.

The CBCP News said the Majayjay Church, restored in 1912, has withstood fires and typhoons as well as served as quarters of American troops during the Filipino-American war.

It is the largest church in Laguna and has been recognized as a national historical treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines for its historical and architectural significance.
