Parents decry dismissal of Dengvaxia cases

A GROUP of parents whose children's deaths were linked to Dengvaxia vaccine said that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has erred in dismissing the 98 cases filed against former health secretary and now Iloilo Rep. Janette Garin and several other government officials, as well as top executives of vaccine manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur Inc. and vaccine distributor Zuellig Pharma in 2019.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla cited in his Jan. 10 resolution quotes from American dengue expert Dr. Scott Halstead's interview with National Public Radio (NPR) concerning the disease on May 2, 2019.

Ronald Jerome Nieves of the Public Attorney's Office and counsel of Samahan ng mga Magulang mga Anak ay Biktima ng Dengvaxia said Halstead, during the NPR interview, clearly warned of the risks of the dengue vaccine.

«I just say, no, you can't give a vaccine to somebody — some perfectly normal, healthy person — and now put them at risk for the rest of their lives for plasma leakage syndrome. You can't do that,» Halstead told Michaeleen Doucleff of NPR.

Halstead's medical theory was in agreement with the post-mortem findings of PAO Forensics Team that include brain and multi-organ bleeding, as well as organ enlargement and edema with no history of said concomitant indications.

The group, led by Quirino and Marichu Mangligot, said they hope that the DOJ will rectify its resolution to prevent further injustice.

«The leaking blood and deaths of the multiple victims, 170 children and adults, are crying and shouting for justice and due care,» it added.
