PH committed to peaceful resolution of sea row, says DFA

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines government, through its Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), will continue to strive for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to its maritime dispute with China in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

During Friday's Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon TV program, which aired on PTV4, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo stressed that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s instruction to them has not changed regarding the sea dispute, which he described as the primary security concern challenge in the region.

«The DFA's approach, as instructed by the President, is to resolve this matter peacefully through diplomatic means and in accordance with international laws. At the same time, we are committed to promoting Philippine sovereignty and sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea, also in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) UNCLOS,» said the Foreign Affairs chief in Filipino.

He said they would continue to talk to their counterparts from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), which has produced positive results.

«The results have been positive, as demonstrated by the smooth and peaceful maintenance of our vessel, the M/V Sierra Madre, in the West Philippine Sea, for which we continue to implement resupply missions for our soldiers,» Manalo said.

He said that if any incidents of violence occurred, they would fall outside the existing agreements between the Philippines and China. We are taking ongoing steps to peacefully resolve such issues, including those at Ayungin Shoal, Bajo de Masinloc, and other areas.
