Phivolcs reports minor eruption at Taal Volcano

MANILA, Philippines — Taal Volcano had a minor phreatomagmatic eruption on Monday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The volcanic burst took place at 7:34 p.m. which generated a 600-meter plume, the agency said.

The event was accompanied by a volcanic tremor that lasted for three minutes, it added.

Phivolcs said a phreatomagmatic eruption occurs when magma interacts with water, causing explosive events that produce a mix of steam, ash, and fragmented volcanic materials.

A phreatic eruption happens when water comes into contact with hot volcanic materials (either rocks or gases), producing steam, ash and sometimes fragmented volcanic materials.

Phivolcs reminded the public anew to stay away from the volcano's permanent danger zone «which is the whole of Taal Volcano Island as another eruptions can take place anytime.»
