Senate ends session without tackling VP Sara Duterte’s impeachment case

MANILA, Philippines — The Senate of the Philippines went on a break on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, without addressing the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte.

Earlier that day, the House of Representatives made history by impeaching Duterte, with 215 lawmakers endorsing the move.  The count was more than the minimum requirement of the one third needed to impeach her.

House Secretary General Reginald Velasco formally delivered the articles of impeachment to the Senate, where they were received by Senate Secretary Renato Bantug at 5:49 PM.

Despite this, the articles were not discussed during the Senate's plenary session.

Sen. Joel Villanueva had explained that any action on the impeachment case would require a decision by the plenary. Specifically, senators must determine whether to prepare for an impeachment trial during their break and ahead of the midterm elections.

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III noted that procedural flexibility exists.

“The rules can be waived as long as it is [with] 100% consent,” Pimentel said in an ambush interview after the session adjourned.

He added that such measures would only apply in extraordinary circumstances. Pimentel also noted that it would ultimately be up to Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri to clarify how proceedings will unfold.
