Toyota now has plug-in hybrid Alphard

TOYOTA continues its journey toward electrification through a multi-solution approach, recognizing that different regions transition to electric vehicles (EVs) at varying speeds. Enter the new 2025 Toyota Alphard PHEV (plug-in hybrid EV), which aims to meet the demand for a luxury MPV with a decent electric range while still offering the reassurance of a gasoline engine.

The main highlight of the 2025 Toyota Alphard PHEV is its new 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Borrowing the same 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle Dynamic Force engine from the Alphard Hybrid available in the Philippines, this version produces 177 horsepower (hp), down from the 188 hp in the regular hybrid, because its electric motors are far more powerful. The front electric motor alone delivers 180 hp, while the rear motor produces 54 hp. True to Toyota's practice, the total system output — 302 hp — is not simply a sum of each motor's figures, as both the electric motors and the engine reach peak power at different engine speeds. Still, at 302 horses, it outperforms the Alphard Hybrid's 248 hp.

A plug-in hybrid's key advantage is its ability to run in pure electric mode over longer distances than a typical hybrid. For the Alphard PHEV, that range is 73 kilometers (km) under the WLTC cycle (a slightly different protocol than WLTP). Its lithium-ion nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery can be charged via both AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current), supporting a maximum DC fast charging of 50 kilowatts — enough to reach 80 percent charge from 10 percent in just 38 minutes.

Toyota also mentions that the Alphard PHEV offers improved comfort, as the air conditioning can run without starting the engine — an environmental plus when waiting for passengers. A new «smooth stop» control system further reduces nose dive when coming to a stop, enhancing overall ride comfort.

Design-wise, the 2025 Toyota Alphard PHEV sets itself apart with PHEV badging and unique 19-inch wheels featuring a silver sputtering finish. Inside, the headliner is fashioned from ultrasuede, while the steering wheel features woodgrain trim.

With these enhancements and its generous electric range, one question remains: Should
