VCT handles first gearless vessel in Iloilo

VISAYAS Container Terminal (VCT), operated by International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) at the Port of Iloilo, handled its first gearless vessel on Jan. 9.

The MV Otana Bhum, operated by Regional Container Lines (RCL), made its inaugural call, marking a new development in port operations for the region.

This milestone follows the September 2024 delivery of two mobile harbor cranes (MHCs) to VCT, enhancing its capacity to handle larger vessels, including gearless ships. The MHCs are essential in supporting the terminal's ability to accommodate evolving shipping requirements.

The MV Otana Bhum, with a length overall of 147 meters and a capacity of 1,022 TEUs, operates under RCL's Singapore-Philippines 6 (RSP6) service. The service connects Singapore, Iloilo, Zamboanga, Cebu and Tagoloan, linking key regional and international trade hubs.

«The arrival of RCL's Otana Bhum highlights our port's capabilities and demonstrates our commitment to fostering economic growth in the region,» said John Largo, VICT CEO. «This development positions Iloilo as a key player in the Visayas, offering enhanced connectivity and efficient services for shipping lines and stakeholders.»

The vessel's arrival sets the stage for increased trade opportunities, streamlined operations and strengthened global connectivity for the region. VCT's modern facilities and ICTSI's continued investments reflect a shared vision of transforming Iloilo into an international gateway.

Strategically located in Central Philippines, VCT's modernized infrastructure enhances regional connectivity. Supported by an extensive road network, the terminal plays a critical role in driving trade, particularly for the agriculture and fisheries exports of Western Visayas.
