SPNEC confirms it is looking for investors in Terra Solar to help fund project dev't

SP New Energy [SPNEC 1.11, up 0.9%] [link], Meralco’s [MER 373.00, down 1.8%] new renewable energy subsidiary, confirms a report that it was seeking investors to help fund the development of the 3.5 GW Terra Solar project, but clarified that it is only seeking investors “at the Terra Solar Philippines Inc. level,” and that it has only “just launched the process and are still in discussions with various possible investors.” Manny Pangilinan, the Chairman of SPNEC and SPNEC’s ultimate parent company said that they need investors “to help us in financing” as MER is starting “to see the complexities that flow from the execution of a project of this scale.” Mr. Pangilinan said that SPNEC is speaking with foreign investors, but did not indicate if that was in addition to potential domestic investors.

Bloomberry posts FY23 profit of P9.5-B (UP 85%)

Bloomberry [BLOOM 11.38, down 1.9%] [link], the gaming arm of Enrique Razon’s diversified empire, posted a FY23 consolidated net income of P9.5 billion, up 85% over its FY22 net income of P5.1 billion. Consolidated net revenues were up 35% to P48.4 billion, while total gross gaming revenues (GGR) were up 16% to P58.3 billion. BLOOM said that its FY23 GGR “has recovered to 97% of the 2019 level”, which BLOOM attributed to the success of its “domestic-focused mass tables” and “Electronic Gaming Machines” segments. BLOOM said that their combined performance is now “116% of pre-pandemic levels”.

ICT FY23 net income down 17% to US $511-M

International Container Terminal Services [ICT 283.20, down 2.0%] [link], the multi-national port operator owned by Enrique Razon, posted FY23 net income of $511 million, which was down 17% from FY22’s $618 million due to a “non-recurring and non-cash impairment of goodwill” related to ICT’s acquisition of Pakistan International Container Terminal (PICT), and to various other increases in expenses and liabilities. ICT said that without the impairment of goodwill attributed to PICT, the company would have had a FY23 net income of $677 million which would have been a 7% improvement over FY22. ICT’s revenues increased 6% to $2.39 billion, and the volume of containers handled increased 4% to 12.7 million.

Enrique Razon - International - Open - Bloomberry open to selling Korean casino resort interests - philstar.com - Philippines - North Korea

Bloomberry open to selling Korean casino resort interests

Bloomberry [BLOOM 11.22 ?3.4%] [link] issued a clarification to a Biz Buzz article to say that it is “open to the possibility of selling its interest in Jeju Sun Hotel and Casino”, but that there is “no imminent deal with respect to [its] sale”. BLOOM said that there have been “several expressions of interest and offers in the past” for the casino resort, and revealed that there’s currently a “growing interest on the property from potential buyers”. The original article said that BLOOM’s owner, Enrique Razon, is looking to sell its Korean assets to “concentrate on its expansion in the Philippines”, like the opening of Solaire Resort North and the development of its project in Ternate, Cavite. The article quoted a source as saying that the assets have “been for sale for a while now but there are still no compelling offers to date.”MB BOTTOM-LINE: Mr. Razon is no stranger to operating in foreign jurisdictions (International Container Terminal [ICT 289.00 ?1.4%] is a great example), so perhaps this move could be more of an opportunity cost issue for BLOOM. The government is leaning into developing its international reputation as a travel destination, and the growth of the international gaming segment is a significant component of that plan. I don’t have any special information about BLOOM’s process or the Korean property, except to say that if the Korean property has technically been on the market for quite some time, coming out to say that there’s actually “several expressions of interest” and “offers in the past” and “growing interest” from new buyers is a good bit of defensive play to both advertise the status of the property as “for sale” while making it sound like there’s a good deal of competition for the privilege of taking it off BLOOM’s hands. What qualifies as an expression of interest? How is it quantifying “growing interest”? It’s the same as when a website puts “10 other users looking at this now” next to an item in a shop. It gives a bit of social proof (other people value this property enough to show interest) and tries to add in a sense of urgency (I better act fast or it will be gone). Just part of the sales game.
