MAYOYAO, Ifugao, is not an easy place to visit. Located 381 kilometers north of Manila in the heart of the Cordillera, and with no direct transportation available, most tourists simply stop in Banaue or Sagada to claim that they have explored the highlands of the north. But for intrepid travelers and the unhurried, Mayoyao offers a wonderful experience of exploring its hidden attractions, meeting its people, and learning more about its heritage and culture.
I HAVE always been fascinated by parols or lanterns. As a child, I would count and stop at houses with lighted parols on our way home from church. To most of us who grew up in the provinces, the parol is the symbol of Christmas, not Santa Claus or Christmas trees.
EVER dreamed of being a cowboy for a day, watching the sunrise over a valley surrounded by breathtaking mountain peaks, deep canyons, and gorges? Head straight to Impasugong, which has been declared the tribal capital of Bukidnon and the mountain tourism capital of the province.
I NEVER realized it was possible to drive to Vigan in just six hours. Typically, the journey to this northern heritage city takes at least 10 hours for me. However, with a combination of well-maintained highways, a dependable vehicle, and the right departure time from Manila, reaching Vigan in six hours, even with stopovers, is now achievable.
DON Victoriano Chiongbian, or Don Victoriano for short, serves as the gateway to Mt. Malindang National Park, a complex volcano located in Misamis Occidental. The mountain range is home to many waterfalls, a crater lake, and virgin forests hosting rare species of flora and fauna. Don Victoriano plays host to those who wish to explore the majestic Mt. Malindang.
THE Jintotolo Channel, connecting the Visayan Sea and Sibuyan Sea, is an important shipping route between Luzon and the Visayas. It is also a rich fishing ground that has made Roxas City, located south of the channel, the Seafood Capital of the Philippines. However, there's an emerging seafood capital north of the channel where you can get the freshest seafood from the local market and have them cooked while enjoying kilometers of empty white sand beaches. This is the town of Balud, on the southern tip of Masbate.
IT'S hard to believe that there's a place south of Manila blessed with mountain lakes and waterfalls. Where people are warm and hospitable, always ready to share their rich heritage and colorful past. Where nature's bounty continues to provide fresh produce that nourishes the body and warms the soul. This place is Cavinti, Laguna, and it only takes two to three hours to experience this paradise.
