SPORTING CHANCE - Kevin Durant - Nikola Jokic - Restudying salary caps - philstar.com - state Indiana

Restudying salary caps

In the NBA, there are soft salary caps where teams may avail of exceptions to exceed limits but a luxury tax is imposed if so-called aprons are breached. The formulas of exceptions are complicated and the computation of a luxury tax is just as complex. A player may negotiate a contract with no individual cap but the restriction is the team’s salary limit of $136 million this season. Among the NBA’s 30 teams, only three are paying under the cap – Charlotte, Orlando and Indiana, meaning 27 franchises are exercising exceptions or paying the luxury tax to the league.

Long shot to Paris

FIBA secretary-general Andreas Zagklis himself once said “bilog ang bola,” referring to the unpredictability of the outcome in a basketball game. So in evaluating the probability of Gilas surviving the Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in Riga, Latvia, in July, you can’t totally rule out a surprise finish. Of course, the odds are extremely daunting. The chances are slim or none. But playing the game isn’t just all about winning. It’s showing up on the court, ready to give your all, no matter the obstacles. Representing your country proudly on the global stage is a serious matter and whether you win or lose, what really counts is how you wear your national colors.

Forgotten naturalized stepkids

The record books will show that the Philippines won its last FIBA Asia Cup (then known as the Asian Basketball Confederation Championships) in Kuala Lumpur in 1985-86. It’s been 37 long years since then and a lot of fans may have forgotten who were on that Philippine title team. At the time, FIBA allowed a national team to enlist two naturalized players so in the Philippines’ case, they were Jeff Moore and Dennis Still. The other players were Allan Caidic, Samboy Lim, Hector Calma, Franz Pumaren, Yves Dignadice, Elmer Reyes, Alfie Almario, Tonichi Yturri, Jerry Codinera, Pido Jarencio and Benjie Gutierrez. Coach was Ron Jacobs.

‘It will take a village’

PSC chairman Richard (Dicky) Bachmann’s personal history is imbedded in sports. His late father Kurt was a major influence in basketball, having played on championship teams in the NCAA and MICAA with stints in the 1959 FIBA World Cup, 1960 Olympics and 1962 Asian Games during a checkered career. It was destined that Bachmann would follow in his father’s footsteps. Bachmann saw action on two UAAP title squads and as Alaska’s first-round pick in the 1993 PBA draft, played on eight pro championship teams with the Aces. When his playing career ended, Bachmann became an Alaska assistant coach and added four more PBA crowns to his collection. And when his coaching career came to a close, Bachmann was elevated to the position of team manager and later, Alaska sports director with a focus on building a grassroots foundation for basketball, football and volleyball.
