HANGZHOU – Men’s pole vault champion EJ Obiena of the Philippines made news by setting a new Asian Games record of 5.90 meters last Saturday. For that, he landed in the inside pages of the Asiad Daily, an eight-page, English-written tabloid that tells about the exploits of the thousands of athletes competing here. Obiena, 27, was in the news Monday. “Philippines pole vaulter raises the bar,” said the story head, referring to world No. 2 and Italy-trained pole vaulter who delivered his country’s first athletics gold in the Asian Games since 1986, the year of the popular EDSA Revolution. That’s how long his country waited for another gold after the late Lydia de Vega ruled the century dash in Seoul. “I’m excited to take this medal, put it on a shelf,” Obiena was quoted as saying. “To me this is the biggest job. Our country needed it. And it’s my job to bring it,” he told Pinoy mediamen here. Obiena is back home to celebrate the victory with his countrymen and his family – and left his fine footprints here.
One in a zillion
It’s not often that athletes like Manny Pacquiao, Hidilyn Diaz, Caloy Yulo and EJ Obiena emerge in the same lifetime. In their sport, they’re one in a zillion. There will never be another Pacquiao who’s in the record books as the only boxer to win world titles in eight different weight divisions. There will never be another Diaz who was No. 11 in the women’s 58kg weightlifting class at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, crashed out without a score in clean and jerk in the same weight category at the 2012 London Olympics, dropped to 53kg to snatch the silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics then settled at 55kg to strike paydirt at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. There will never be another Yulo who at 19, won the gold in floor exercise at the World Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart in 2019 and at 21, bagged the gold in vault at the World Gymnastics Championships in Kitakyushu in 2021. Who would’ve imagined that a 4-11 kid could mesmerize the world in gymnastics?

Inflation slides to 4.7% in July, slows for sixth consecutive month
The country’s headline inflation rate slid to 4.7 percent in July 2023, marking the sixth consecutive month of deceleration. This is within the month-ahead forecast range of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) of 4.1 to 4.9 percent.
Inflation cools to 5.4% in June, lowest in 13 months
Headline inflation eased for the fifth consecutive month in June 2023 to 5.4 percent, down from 6.1 percent in May and at its lowest level since the 5.4 percent recorded in May 2022. The June inflation rate is within the 5.3 to 6.1 percent forecast range of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and settled below the median estimate of 5.5 percent by private analysts.
