A multistage design for low-cost housing

THE concept «kuwadrado» encapsulates an interplay between its own meaning as a four-squared corner and the word «kwadro» which means a blank painting canvas. As an architectural design, it transforms the traditional static low-cost architecture into a dynamic structure that will evolve alongside the needs of its inhabitants. It allows the home to be built in stages, significantly reducing its initial cost.

Thus, families start living with a basic core unit that provides basic necessities along with horizontal and vertical expansion. The durability and adaptability of steel framing facilitate this expansion, permitting users to add to their homes without risking the existing foundation's structural integrity. The concept enhances the building form while retaining the users' character, like a canvas waiting to be painted by its owner.

This concept of a customizable multi-family dwelling unit, designed by students from the Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), won the championship in the inaugural Phinma Construction Materials Group (Phinma CMG) hackathon on affordable and viable housing solutions for low-income Filipino families.

Inspired by life in the Baseco Compound, the project also provides PWD-friendly housing and a community space for inhabitants.

The project's implementation would cover a lot area of 67.55 square meters and a floor area of 36 square meters, with an overall construction cost of P280,315.11.

The TUP team received cash prizes of P50,000 for the championship and P10,000 for its other triumph, the Most Sustainable Award, which recognizes outstanding commitment to sustainability, focus on eco-friendly materials, energy efficiency and resource conservation.

Its mentors for the hackathon included Ar. Rodelon Ramos, Design and Innovations manager for Habitat for Humanity Philippines, a partner organization for the hackathon, and Engr. Romie Zapanta from the TUP Civil Engineering Department.
