After landfall, ‘Kabayan’ weakens into LPA

“KABAYAN” made landfall in Manay town in Davao Oriental yesterday and weakened hours later into low pressure area (LPA) from a tropical storm.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said a re-intensification is not being ruled out.

Before Kabayan weakened into an LPA, 29 areas in the Visayas and Mindanao were still until storm Signal No. 1.

Kabayan intensified into a storm from a tropical depression on Sunday night. It weakened into a tropical depression before making landfall in Manay at 9:30 a.m. yesterday. At around 2:30 p.m., Kabayan further weakened into an LPA, PAGASA said.

No area is under any storm signal warning, PAGASA said in a bulletin issued at 5 p.m. yesterday.

The LPA was in the vicinity of Impasug-ong in Bukidnon as of 4 p.m. yesterday, said PAGASA weather specialist Veronica Torres during a press briefing.

Torres said they are not ruling out the possibility that the LPA, which she said was moving northwest at 25 kph, will redevelop into a tropical depression while at the Sulu Sea.

Kabayan is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility tomorrow.

Torres said that while Kabayan has already weakened into an LPA, it will still bring rain showers and thunderstorms in the Visayas and Mindanao; Mimaropa and Bicol regions, and in the provinces of Aurora and Quezon.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Kabayan and the shearline have displaced 2,190 families or 6,723 in 43 barangays in Caraga.

The NDRRMC said 2,072 families or 6,370 individuals are housed in 48 evacuation centers while the rest of the 118 families or 353 individuals are staying with their relatives or friends.

There were power interruptions in three areas in Caraga although power was later restored.

The Philippine Coast Guard said that as of yesterday afternoon, there were 2,461 passengers, truck drivers and cargo helpers stranded at ports in Visayas and Mindanao due to suspension of sea travel.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is ready to assist those affected by Kabayan.

Data from the DSWD Region XI (Davao region) showed that 411 families (1,833 persons)
