'Agatha All Along' showrunner Jac Schaeffer on including 'witch-y' pop culture in new Marvel show

MANILA, Philippines — The upcoming show "Agatha All Along" dives deep into the magical side of Marvel Comics, touching on different witchcraft pop culture references in the process.

"Agatha All Along" is a spin-off show of "WandaVision" centered on Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness, who forms a new coven in an attempt to regain her magical powers.

Key to the story is the Witches' Road — trials that rewards a witch if won with something they are missing.

While the series draws heavy focus on Agatha, bits of pop culture related to witches find their way into the screenplay, prominently led by "The Wizard of Oz."

Even the credits show different references to witches from real and reel life: the Salem Witch trials, "Bewitched," fairytales, and so much more.

In an exclusive interview with Philstar.com, showrunner Jac Schaeffer — who also worked on "WandaVision" — shared how pop culture references make for a more fun viewing for audiences.

"I love pop culture allusions, I'm sort of greedy about it so everything is an opportunity to pull different allusions into the process," Schaeffer admitted.

Schaeffer did add she didn't consider at first that such references could be way for non-fans of Marvel to access of connect to Agatha, but still called it a nice way of thinking.

"I would imagine people who are excited about the show are going to speak this language, recognize 'The Wizard of Oz' and the craft, allusions to all the witchy-ness that we show," the director continued.

The showrunner ended by calling the usage of pop culture references as a form of celebration, "If you love content, movies, and TV, and you're seeing it reflected on your favorite stuff, it's very joyous and I hope people love it."

"Agatha All Along" premieres its first two episodes on Disney+ this September 18, with the remaining seven episodes coming out weekly until November 6.
