Ayala cooperative taps STAR to promote media literacy

MANILA, Philippines — In a bid to enhance media literacy and help expose the youth to truthful, credible news, Ayala Multi-Purpose Cooperative (Ayala Coop) and The Philippine STAR recently joined forces to implement the READISCOVER program in three pilot schools across the country.

The partnership marks a significant step towards promoting the responsible use of media among students by providing them with access to high-quality journalism and fostering a culture of informed reading.

Founded in October 1995, the Ayala Multi-Purpose Cooperative has grown from a modest group of 21 Ayala Group employees to a formidable force with over 37,000 members nationwide and more than P5 billion in capitalization.

Known for its commitment to providing members with high returns on savings, accessible loan options and a focus on microfinance, Ayala Coop has established itself as a beacon of financial empowerment and community support.

Its extensive history of corporate social responsibility, particularly in education, health and nutrition, sustainable livelihood and disaster response has earned it recognition and accolades, including a Hall of Fame status from the Makati Cooperative Development Office.

The READISCOVER program aligns with Ayala Coop’s focus on education as part of its community efforts. Spearheaded by The Philippine STAR, it aims to address a growing concern over the decline in long-form reading and analytical skills among students exacerbated by distractions brought about by the digital age.

By offering unrestricted access to The Philippine STAR’s ePaper, digital archives and engaging educational content, READISCOVER seeks to instill a habit of informed reading and provide a comprehensive learning platform that includes news literacy, critical thinking and creative expression.

Dina Barredo Orosa, general manager of Ayala Coop, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We’re excited because our main advocacy is education. With READISCOVER, we aim to reach more than we already have. It’s something new for us, and we’re eager to contribute to shaping a generation that understands the importance of right news and informed decisions.”
