Crackdown starts on 'unlicensed' PUJs

SEVERAL public utility jeepneys (PUJs) have opted to take a daily gamble, hoping they would not get caught as the government starts its crackdown on unconsolidated jeepneys, now considered unlicensed.

Interviewed over government station PTV 4, Eddie Sadile, a jeepney operator for the past 25 years plying Antonio Rivera-Raon and vice versa in Manila, admitted that he is taking a huge gamble.

«Ang sabi ko ng sa driver ko eh konting ingat na lang (I told my driver to be careful),» he said.

If caught, the driver faces up to P10,000 in fines and a one year suspension of his driver's license. The operator will have to shell out P50,000 to redeem his jeepney.

Faced with this grim prospect, Sadile simply said: «Hindi ko na tutubusin… napakalaki ng halaga (I'd rather not redeem my impounded jeepney, the cost is too high),» he said.
