DICT helps DFA in ‘data breach’ probe

MANILA, Philippines — An initial investigation into the alleged data breach at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is appearing to be “fake,” the Department of Information and Communications Technology said yesterday.

DICT Undersecretary for infostructure management, cybersecurity and upskilling Jeffrey Ian Dy said they have taken the initiative to look into the reported hacking of the DFA database.

According to Dy, the circulating data they have seen from a supposed DFA database was from 2022.

Dy clarified that the DICT probe was done motu propio since there was no request from the DFA for any technical assistance.

The DICT said it had communicated with the DFA about the alleged hacking.

However, DFA spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza said the department is doing its own investigation.

The cyber attack came after cybersecurity watchdog Deep Web Konek reported the incident on Wednesday.

The DFA said it has received reports of email data being sold online.

The DFA said the threat actor, identified as “chengyi,” is reportedly behind the breach.–  Pia Lee-Brago
