Female career civil servants now outnumber males 6 to 4

THE number of male civil servants in government dropped in the last 12 months while women landed more government jobs – and better-paying ones, too.

Based on human resource figures released last week by the Commission on Civil Service (CSC), the total male career and non-career workers fell from 883,612 on June 30, 2023 to 832,867 as of June 30, 2024 or a decrease of 50,475.

In contrast, the number of females holding career and non-career posts rose from 1,089,688 to 1,204,589 over the same period, or an increase of 114,901.

The first six months of the current year also saw the first time that the total inventory of government human resources breached the two-million mark to end at 2.04 million.

CSC data showed the headcount of men in the government workforce retreated on all fronts on the same 12-month cutoff from 58.56 percent (129,615) to 56.42 percent (108,910) of the total non-career civil servants and from 43 percent (753,997) to 39.25 percent (723,957) of career posting.

The number of women in non-career positions likewise decreased from 91,710 mi-2023 to 84,112 mid-2024 but the increase in female career civil servants more than took up the slack from 997,978 (57 percent) to 1,120,477 (60.75 percent).

A breakdown of the CSC data per region showed the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) accounted for the biggest climb in female workers acquiring career postings from only 10,560 in June 2023 to 32,395 as of June 2024 – an increase of 206.7 percent.

Also showing a significant increase in female career workers’ tally was Region 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) from 29,905 in June 2023 to 37,340 as of June 2024 – a 24.86 percent increase.
