I wish I could choose a better title but I was really shocked when I found out about microplastics and how they have gotten into our food. If you read more about fish and how they absorb or eat microplastics, you may just become carnivorous again. But if you have already skipped red meat and chicken and have turned to fish as a safer protein, think again. Knowing about plastics and how our oceans are full of it may drive you to avoid fish and turn vegetarian.
I just had a wonderful lunch at a pop up of this Cubao restaurant and I am happy. Having talked about Slow Food (www.slowfood.com) for over ten years now (when these young chefs were still babies), I am happy there is now a category called “Progressive Pinoy” food.
Many red meat eaters think that switching to chicken is the lesser evil. Think again. We are importing chicken wings, thighs and drumsticks – admittedly my most favorite parts of the bird – but now I am having second thoughts after learning that imported chicken causes more heartaches to our farmers. Is it the fact it’s deep fried? No, it’s simply the fact that if we continue to eat imported bird parts, we compromise our local chicken industry. Not just the poultry owners but a whole value chain connected to chicken.
MILLIE: Cheese is a great family favorite; it was my dad’s perfect meal ender, not a sweet dessert. His favorite was Tete de Moine, Cougar, Gruyere, Camembert de Normandie, and he also enjoyed blue cheese, sharp cheddar and even kesong puti. I, on the other hand, love raclette, bloomy rinds like camembert and brie bridel. I enjoy blue d’Auvergne and Cambozola, but my all-time favorite is the cave-aged gruyere!
Who does not believe in karma? This is a concept that is difficult to teach to non-believers until they actually experience it. And we hope they experience the good kind. Bad karma is as it is said – negative and sometimes evil.

I have been lucky to meet some bakers during the pandemic who live close to my house and who could deliver freshly-baked bread straight to my doorstep. It surely beats buying commercial bread.
