Still the No. 1 sport

Despite volleyball’s increasing popularity across the archipelago, there is no doubt that basketball remains the country’s No. 1 sport. And with Gilas’ recent feats, fan interest has billowed to impact growing audiences in hoop leagues from pros to minnows. PBA commissioner Willie Marcial, who served as the Golden Gilas’ deputy team manager at the Hangzhou Asian Games, said how the national team fares in international competitions has a direct consequence in either dropping or raising engrossment in the sport.

Globalization evident in PBA

The various countries represented by the PBA’s 12 imports in the Commissioner’s Cup this season reflects the globalization of basketball with FIBA’s initiatives to grow the game world-wide clearly bearing fruit. The PBA had never rolled out an import cast that is as diverse. And this development comes at the heels of the FIBA World Cup where the Philippines was the primary host.

Finally, TNT gets a break

It hasn’t been a smooth ride for TNT in the run-up to the PBA’s 48th season opening game where the Tropang Giga faces Magnolia at the Smart Araneta Coliseum tonight. TNT lost twice to the Japanese B-League runner-up Chiba Jets in a low start to its EASL campaign with more than a handful of players unavailable for duty.

Is Denver unbeatable?

After only four games in the NBA season, it’s too early to declare the defending champion Denver Nuggets the runaway favorites to retain the crown even if they’re unbeaten and crushing the opposition by an average margin of 14.25 points. However, there are clear signs that despite losing Bruce Brown and Jeff Green during the summer, the Nuggets are fierce and formidable.

Will Brown seek redemption?

In the 2010-11 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, San Miguel Beer opened the conference with import Ira Brown of Gonzaga University. There were high hopes that Brown, 29, would take the Beermen deep into the playoffs with previous glowing stints in Mexico and Argentina. But things didn’t work out as expected. Brown was jettisoned out of the league after two games, scoring 30 in a 92-87 loss to Air 21 and 18 in a 90-89 win over Meralco. None of the players he went up against or teamed with is still active except for Chris Ross who was then with Meralco. Brown was unceremoniously replaced by David Young and San Miguel never made it out of the elimination gates.

New role for Arwind

For nine-time PBA champion and two-time PBA Finals MVP Arwind Santos, there is life after the PBA where he became a certified superstar over 16 seasons. When his NorthPort contract ran out last month, he fulfilled a long-time dream to play for his home province Pampanga and joined the Giant Lanterns of mentor/father figure Gov. Delta Pineda in the MPBL. That’s not all.  Santos, 42, was named commissioner of the National Basketball Championships Inter-High (NBCIH), a nationwide private school boys league organized by Jams Sports with a P1 million prize for the grand winner.

Harsh or not-so-harsh penalty?

SBP is awaiting FIBA’s verdict on Justin Brownlee’s penalty after testing positive for an ingredient or compound in cannabis found in his urine sample from an extraction following Gilas’ game against Jordan in the Asian Games championship game in Hangzhou last Oct. 6. Brownlee had the option to contest the finding and request the anti-doping agency to test his other sample as two samples were taken. But according to Gilas team manager and San Miguel Corp. sports director Alfrancis Chua, it was decided not to test the second sample as an unfavorable finding would likely result in a stiffer penalty.
