PBA expansion in works

No details were disclosed but PBA chairman Ricky Vargas said the Board of Governors is seriously looking into expansion to ride the wave of the future and with over 120 applicants in the recent draft that went to 11 rounds, the clamor to add more teams is resounding. Vargas revealed the plan which he described as “long-term” during the PBA season-opening press conference at the five-star Diamond Hotel Philippines, Roxas Boulevard the other day.

Boxing in Olympic limbo after Paris

The International Olympic Committee has ruled out a working relationship with the discredited leadership of IBA, the long-standing international governing federation of boxing  In the Tokyo Olympics, IOC formed an interim body to oversee the operations of the sport and allay suspicions of corrupt officiating.  IOC will continue to supervise boxing in Paris but beyond next year’s Games, it’s a murky future unless another federation claims widespread global recognition and support from credible leaders.

Gilas lead assistant coach Richard del Rosario disclosed the other day that with the uncertainty of which players would be allowed to suit up in the recent Hangzhou Asian Games less than a week before departure, the option of withdrawing was brought to the table. Note that Lebanon backed out of the competition so if the Philippines followed suit, it wouldn’t have been unprecedented.

It didn’t look like a championship squad at the onset. Putting a mix-up in recruiting players behind him, Gilas coach Tim Cone re-assembled a cast for a first practice together five days before a scheduled departure for Hangzhou to play in the Asian Games. A single tune-up game against a visiting Korean pro club LG Sakers was squeezed into the calendar and sensing the need for a little more practice time, Cone delayed taking the flight out by a day.
