Floodgate repair prevented disastrous floods

MALABON City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval on Tuesday said the prompt repair conducted by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on the damaged navigational gate of the Malabon-Navotas River prevented worse flooding in the area.

«On behalf of my constituents, I would like to express my gratitude to MMDA and DPWH for working hand in hand to fix the floodgate right on time,» she added.

«We could say timely because we were expecting heavy rainfall due to typhoons and southwest monsoon or habagat, and this floodgate would largely minimize floodwaters,» Sandoval said, noting the maintenance work prevented extensive damage on infrastructure and property.

«But the effects were just minimal in the city as compared during Typhoon Carina and southwest monsoon at the time the navigational gate was undergoing repair,» she added.

The navigational gate was damaged when a fishing boat was forcibly towed through it in June. The incident resulted in flooding of villages in Malabon and Navotas.

Sandoval vowed to implement more flood control projects in the city.
