Group welcomes govt position on ICC probe
THE Federation of Free Workers (FFW) on Wednesday welcomed the decision of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to allow the International Criminal Court (ICC) to conduct investigations in the country on the alleged crimes against humanity committed during the drug war of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
«The continuing investigation underscores that the pursuit of justice knows no borders, and national sovereignty cannot be used as a shield for those accountable for such heinous crimes,» FFW said in a statement.
«The tragic loss of over 6,000 lives, including 73 children — one as young as five months — during the war on drugs demands a thorough and impartial investigation as mandated by the ICC under the Rome Statute,» it added.
Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra said in a recent television interview that the government would not stand in the way of the ICC's probe into the alleged human rights abuses committed during Duterte's war on drugs.
