High school researchers advance to international science fair

STUDENTS from Angeles City Science High School (ACSHS) gear up for the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair 2024 (ISEF 2024) from May 11 to 17 in Los Angeles, California.

The research team, consisting of Frances Gabrielle Bingcang, Hart Gabrielle Ong, Jessica Loreen Yabut, and their coach Lolita Bautista, booked a seat at the fair with their study «In Vitro Study of Bioceramics from Bamboo Leaf Ash and Green Mussel Shells with Silver (Ag) Coating and 3D-Printing Applications for Bone Regeneration.»

Supported by the Department of Science and Technology-Central Luzon Grants-In-Aid (DoST GIA), their study was hailed for its potential impact on bone regeneration.

The students have been on a roll since their first-place finish at the DepEd Division Science Fair in 2023. Their journey continued with regional acclaim and victory at the Department of Education 2024 National Science and Technology Fair held from April 1 to 5 at the Sequoia Hotel in Parañaque City.

According to its website, Regeneron ISEF is the world's largest pre-college STEM competition administered by the Society for Science, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. It aims to increase interest in science, technology, engineering and math education for students who may not have considered STEM areas as future career options. ISEF Grand Awards are presented cash awards in each of the 21 ISEF categories: 1st Award, $5,000; 2nd Award, $2,000; 3rd Award, $1,000; and 4th Award, $500.

During the opening ceremonies of the 2024 NSTF, DoST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. encouraged participants and coaches to serve as ambassadors of science, technology and innovation (STI) in their respective communities.
