Lead drive vs mpox, illnesses – LGUs told

AMID the threat of the spread of mpox and the rising numbers of leptospirosis and dengue cases in the country, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday urged local government executives to lead information drives on promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing illnesses.

In his speech during the Local Governance Summit 2024 in Pasay City, Marcos said the Department of Health (DoH) has attributed the surge in leptospirosis and dengue cases to improper garbage disposal and poor waste management.

«Local chief executives must work harder to utilize environmentally sound methods and waste minimization measures to protect public health and, of course, our environment,» Marcos said.

«So, I urge you all to lead aggressive information dissemination campaign to promote a healthy lifestyle and prevent diseases, such as a campaign to remind our people, especially children, against swimming in flood waters and to practice [proper] personal hygiene to mitigate the spread of leptospirosis, mpox, and other illnesses,» he added.

There are 10 confirmed mpox cases in the Philippines, so far.

The DoH has reported 523 new cases of leptospirosis in its hospitals from August 8 to 13, in addition to the 255 cases recorded nationwide from July 25 to August 7.

In the past three weeks, the DoH logged 43 deaths because of leptospirosis.

Also, the President mentioned the Kalinisan Program led by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), which reflects efforts in improving waste disposal and management to ensure a clean, healthy and safe environment for the public.
