HANGZHOU – Gilas coach Tim Cone and his deputies must have spent hours trying to dissect the Thai team the Filipinos are going to face today in the basketball competitions of the 19th Asian Games here.
It could be the most problematic Gilas team ever but no matter the odds, coach Tim Cone is armed for battle with a band of brothers determined to fight ‘til the final buzzer of every contest at the Hangzhou Asian Games. The campaign began yesterday with Gilas taking on Bahrain. Then, the Philippines battles Thailand tomorrow and Jordan on Saturday. If Gilas winds up on top of Group C at the end of the round-robin preliminaries, it automatically qualifies for the quarterfinals to begin on Oct. 3. In that scenario, Gilas will play the winner of a knockout between Group A’s No. 2 (possibly, Kazakhstan) and Group B’s No. 3 (possibly, Hong Kong). If the Philippines advances to the semifinals, it could be a showdown with host China, expected to sweep Group B. In the final, Group A’s Iran or Group D’s South Korea could make it to clash with either Gilas or China.
HANGZHOU – The Philippine women’s football team bowed to South Korea last Monday but not necessarily out of contention in the 19th Asian Games here.
HANGZHOU – She probably ought to have been in primary school, but instead Mazel Paris Alegado – aged nine – competed in skateboarding at the Asian Games on Monday.
HANGZHOU – Jones Inso of wushu delivered a bronze medal for Team Philippines on a sunny Monday afternoon when others tried very hard, but failed, to land on the coveted podium in the 19th Asian Games here.
HANGZHOU – Yes, the Chinese weather cooperated, paving the way for a smoother-than-expected staging of the formal opening ceremony for the 19th Asian Games. It’s been damp and cold and drizzling the past two days here, forcing organizers to devise a backup plan and an “abridged version” of the two-hour ceremony at a nearby indoor venue in case the rains fall. But the dazzling, one-of-a-kind show went on as planned with athletes from the 45 competing countries joining the traditional march. Then they were led to the stands, and were allowed to leave the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium by 9 p.m. if they wished. Those from Afghanistan were first to come out all the way down to athletes from Yemen. The Chinese, who have topped the Asian Games medal table 10 straight times from 1982, came out last. And not the least. Koreans up next
