Two left standing

MANILA, Philippines — Featherweight Carlo Paalam and lightheavyweight Eumir Marcial are the last two warriors in contention from the Philippine boxing team of nine with the chance of qualifying for the Paris Olympics still on the table at the Hangzhou Asian Games. The finalists of the 57kg featherweight and 80kg lightheavyweight classes advance to Paris where the competition will be in 13 divisions, seven for men and six for women.

EJ in the news

HANGZHOU – Men’s pole vault champion EJ Obiena of the Philippines made news by setting a new Asian Games record of 5.90 meters last Saturday. For that, he landed in the inside pages of the Asiad Daily, an eight-page, English-written tabloid that tells about the exploits of the thousands of athletes competing here. Obiena, 27, was in the news Monday. “Philippines pole vaulter raises the bar,” said the story head, referring to world No. 2 and Italy-trained pole vaulter who delivered his country’s first athletics gold in the Asian Games since 1986, the year of the popular EDSA Revolution. That’s how long his country waited for another gold after the late Lydia de Vega ruled the century dash in Seoul. “I’m excited to take this medal, put it on a shelf,” Obiena was quoted as saying. “To me this is the biggest job. Our country needed it. And it’s my job to bring it,” he told Pinoy mediamen here. Obiena is back home to celebrate the victory with his countrymen and his family – and left his fine footprints here.

Eumir faces Viet ‘suki’

MANILA, Philippines — One down, four to go. That’s the countdown for lightheavyweight boxer Eumir Marcial in chasing gold in the 80kg division of the Hangzhou Asian Games. Last Sunday, Marcial opened his Asiad campaign with a bang, outpointing Mongolia’s Dalai Gonzorig, 5-0. It will take four more wins for Marcial to clinch a ticket to the Paris Olympics. His next opponent is Vietnam’s Nguyen Manh Cuong on Friday.

Heads shaking

HANGZHOU – From one headache to another. The woes continued for the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) after it was forced to withdraw its women’s 3x3 team in the 19th Asian Games for lack of players. The team came here with four players, in the hope that Cielo Pagdulagan and Marga Villanueva would be allowed to replace veterans Camille Clarin and Angel Surada. No reason was provided on why Clarin and Surada did not make the trip when their names were on the final list of the Philippine delegation. Coach Pat Aquino learned of the decision Monday morning as the team prepared for its opening game against Jordan. With only Camille Nolasco and Louna Ozar eligible to play, Aquino had to pull the plug. “So sad dahil first time namin dito (Asian Games),” said Aquino. The Gilas men’s team was in the same predicament the past few days after its request to insert players who were not on the list it submitted to organizers were denied at the last minute. Heads are shaking.

Asiad notes

HANGZHOU – Yes, the Chinese weather cooperated, paving the way for a smoother-than-expected staging of the formal opening ceremony for the 19th Asian Games. It’s been damp and cold and drizzling the past two days here, forcing organizers to devise a backup plan and an “abridged version” of the two-hour ceremony at a nearby indoor venue in case the rains fall. But the dazzling, one-of-a-kind show went on as planned with athletes from the 45 competing countries joining the traditional march. Then they were led to the stands, and were allowed to leave the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium by 9 p.m. if they wished. Those from Afghanistan were first to come out all the way down to athletes from Yemen. The Chinese, who have topped the Asian Games medal table 10 straight times from 1982, came out last. And not the least. Koreans up next
