LRT-2 cuts train trips after power cables stolen

MANILA, Philippines — The Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) shortened its train operations yesterday after discovering that some of its power cables were stolen.

The LRT-2 has 13 stations, including Recto in Manila and Antipolo, Rizal. From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. yesterday, trips were limited to and from Recto to Cubao stations, according to LRT-2’s state-run operator Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA).

While the Anonas, Katipunan, Santolan, Pasig/Marikina and Antipolo stations were closed, LRTA personnel “secured the loose power cables due to safety reasons,” LRTA Administrator Hernando Cabrera said.

Some of the power cables in the area after the Katipunan tunnel toward the Marikina River had been “pilfered,” according to Cabrera.

He added the LRTA was still investigating the incident.

Normal train operations from Recto to Antipolo stations and vice versa resumed at 4:10 p.m., according to the LRTA.
