Midwives' vital role recognized

SEN. Bong Go highlighted the crucial role of midwives in the country's health care system during the 50th annual convention of the Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines Inc. (IMAP) at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City on Monday.

Around 3,000 IMAP members attended the event titled Elevating Filipino Midwives Par Excellence: 50 Years and Beyond.

«The role you play in every community is important, especially in remote areas where you are the first expected at the time of childbirth,» said Go, chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography.

Go mentioned legislative efforts to empower midwives, including Senate Bill 2637, which seeks to update Republic Act 7392, or the Philippine Midwifery Act of 1992.

He said modernizing the law would ensure midwives were equipped to provide quality health care.

The bill was pending at the Senate Committee on Civil Service Government Reorganization and Professional Regulation.

«Midwives are at the forefront of maternal and newborn care, especially in rural areas. We must update existing laws to reflect the current challenges and equip our midwives with the necessary skills and support to perform their duties effectively,» Go added.

IMAP was created as a vital platform for sharing knowledge, enhancing skills and promoting the well-being of mothers and newborns across the country.
