Military presence in Camiguin questioned

MANILA, Philippines — Residents have questioned the increased military presence in Camiguin, saying it does not paint a good picture of the island-province.

Hazel Elizabeth Sherawi told The STAR yesterday that the deployment of armored personnel carriers and military trucks during the recently concluded Lanzones Festival sparked concern in the community.

“Stakeholders have raised questions about the necessity and timing of this military presence as Camiguin has long been considered free from insurgents,” Sherawi said.

Earlier, Lt. Col. Christian Uy, chief of the Army’s 58th Infantry Battalion, said the deployment was meant to prevent insurgents from controlling the island.

Residents said except for the killing of two supporters of politicians, no criminal activities have been reported in the province.

They said they saw CAFGU-Civilian Active Auxiliary personnel carrying  firearms in the town of Sagay.

Quoting residents, Sherawi said the armed men were harassing supporters of a politician.

“The timing of this deployment has drawn attention as election season is nearing,” Sherawi said.
