Miru says counting machines for ’25 polls PWD-friendly

THE new automated counting machines (ACMs) to be used in the May 2025 national and local polls will be friendly to voters belonging to the person with disability (PWD) sector, South Korean firm Miru Systems said yesterday.

Miru made the assurance when the new ACMs were demonstrated at the recently held 2024 Philippine Disability Convention at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

Among the features of the ACMs include a control switch, audio guide, and headphones for PWD voters.

They also have an auto-alignment feature to make sure that ballots are read properly when they are inserted into the ACMs.

The ACMs are also customized with 14-inch screens that are adjustable for any height, thereby making it easy for wheelchair users or amputees to access.

Comelec data shows that there are about 800,000 registered voters with disabilities in the Philippines.

“Miru is a leading election provider that prioritizes inclusivity in its designs,” said Miru Systems vice president Ken Cho in a statement.

“We are always innovating to continuously improve our systems as we believe there is nothing more important than a person’s right to vote,” he added.

This was seconded by the Comelec saying its Vulnerable Sectors Office is dedicated to assist those that need special attention during electoral exercises, such as PWDs.

“We want each voter to have an easier time casting their votes. One vote for each Filipino, PWD or not,” said Comelec chairman George Garcia.
