MMDA tells motorists: Brace for road repairs

MANILA, Philippines —  Road repairs will be implemented in some parts of Quezon City and Caloocan when motorists travel to visit their dead during the long weekend.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will conduct road reblocking activities, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced yesterday.

Portions of EDSA southbound, particularly near Fernando Poe Jr. Avenue, West Avenue and Bansalangin street will be closed for repairs.

Commonwealth Avenue is also undergoing repairs from Don Jose to Odigal streets.

In Caloocan City, portions of Gen. San Miguel street, EDSA Monumento Circle and C3 Road will be affected by road reblocking works.

The roads will be reopened at 5 a.m. on Nov. 4, according to the MMDA.

The agency reminded motorists to avoid roads undergoing repairs and use alternative routes.

Meanwhile, the Manila city government appealed to visitors to keep the city’s cemeteries and memorial parks clean as they remember their dead.

Around 44 metric tons equivalent to 15 trucks of garbage were collected yesterday from the Manila North Cemetery, the city’s public information office said.

Fifty trucks of trash were hauled from the Manila South Cemetery in Makati.

Mayor Honey Lacuna said they expect more garbage to be collected from cemeteries run by the city government.

As of 2 p.m. yesterday, around 56,000 people have entered the Manila North Cemetery, according to the local police.

Lacuna urged the public to practice “clean as you go or CLAYGO” in the cemeteries by bringing trash bags and depositing the waste upon exit.

She also warned the public against bringing prohibited items in cemeteries such as guns, knives, alcoholic beverages and sound systems.

The local governments of Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela have deployed personnel to maintain cleanliness and security in cemeteries.

Meanwhile, up to 121,394 travelers headed to the provinces yesterday to commemorate Undas, the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange said.
