Nearly 23K motorcycle accidents so far in Metro this year; 166 fatal

MORE than 22,000 motorcycle-related accidents were recorded in Metro Manila from January to October this year, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said yesterday.

Of the 22,933 accidents, data provided by the agency showed 166 resulted in fatalities, 12,410 sustained non-fatal injuries and 10,357 resulted in damage to properties.

The months of May and January this year proved to be the “most fatal” for motorcycle riders as the MMDA recorded 23 and 22 fatal accidents, respectively.

The same data showed that 26,599 motorcycle-related accidents were recorded in the metropolis last year, with 278 resulting in deaths and 14,305 resulting in non-fatal injuries.

The data also showed 12,016 resulted in damage to properties.

From January to August this year, there were 2,269 pedestrians hit by speeding vehicles along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue and other major thoroughfares in the metropolis.

Last year, the MMDA recorded 3,161 pedestrians who were hit by vehicles.

In 2019, the MMDA reported 4,413 cases of “hit-and-run” and 4,722 “hit pedestrians.”

MMDA Chairperson Romando Artes earlier said a study conducted by the agency showed that every road accident fatality cost, on average, P3.5 million, including lost income and property damage.
