Phivolcs: Only 3 quakes recorded at Kanlaon

THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded only three volcanic quakes at Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island on Monday, the fewest since the volcano’s “explosive eruption” on June 3.

Six quakes were recorded last Sunday.

In a bulletin, Phivolcs said Kanlaon Volcano’s sulfur dioxide emission on Monday was measured at 2,429 tons, from 3,304 tons the previous day.

It said the gas emission produced a 500-meter plume that drifted towards the southwest direction.

Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) remains in effect at Kanlaon Volcano.

The Alert Level 2 was declared after the volcano’s eruption that has affected nearly 30,000 people.

The volcano’s unrest has affected 8,479 families or 29,137 individuals in the Western Visayas and Central Visayas regions, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

Of the number, 1,729 families or 5,962 individuals were displaced though the figure was already down to 1,339 families or 4,751 individuals as of yesterday.
