President congratulates Indian leader for poll win

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for securing another term after his coalition party won more than half of parliamentary seats in the just concluded elections.

«My warmest congratulations to Prime Minister @narendramodi for securing a fresh mandate from the Indian electorate,» Marcos said in a statement posted on his official account on X.

«The last decade has shown India as a sincere friend to the Philippines & I look forward to the further strengthening of our bilateral and regional partnership in the years ahead,» he said.

India held general elections for six weeks starting April 19 — the biggest democratic exercise in the world.

At the end of the tallying of votes last Tuesday, Modi won a third straight term, making him the country's first prime minister to do so in more than 60 years.

Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and India span over 70 years since it was formalized in 1949.
