Santo Niño Basilica imposing dress code

THE Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu (BMSN) is imposing a strict dress code inside the church starting October 1, 2024 as part of its commitment to uphold its sanctity and promote reverence to the religious establishment.

In a public advisory, the Augustinian Friars said they would deny entry to visitors-pilgrims, mass-goers, or even tourists who won’t adhere to the dress code.

“This measure aims to ensure that all visitors-pilgrims, mass-goers, or tourists demonstrate the appropriate respect for this sacred space,” said the BMSN.

“To maintain the solemnity of our worship space, those arriving in attire deemed unsuitable for worship or who attempt to wear shawls rented outside the Basilica will be denied entry,” it added.

Considered proper attire are collared blouses with sleeves, knee-length/long dresses with sleeves, knee-length/long skirts, neckline tops with sleeves, polo shirts, collared shirts, t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, jeans, slacks, office wear, and smart casual.

Deemed improper are spaghetti straps, tube, tank tops, sleeveless, plunging necklines, racerbacks, barebacks, short skirts, crop tops, shorts of any kind, low-waist pants, ripped jeans, caps, hats, sando, and anything without sleeves.

Additionally, the BMSN said it shall no longer allocate shawls to be given to churchgoers starting October 1.

“The Basilica will no longer provide shawls for all visitors,” said the church, also known as Santo Niño Basilica.

It also said tourists who don’t plan on participating in religious activities in the home of the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country may visit from Mondays to Thursdays and Saturdays.

“Tourists are discouraged from visiting the Basilica on Fridays and Sundays unless they intend to participate in the liturgical services,” said the BMSN.

It appealed to the understanding and cooperation of all visitors, saying: “Together, as one Catholic Christian community, let us ensure a respectful and meaningful experience for all who come to the Basilica, the home of our beloved Holy Child, Señor Santo Niño de Cebu.”
