Suspension of online vape sale a recognition of health crisis

PUBLIC health think tank Health Justice yesterday said the order suspending the sale, advertising, and distribution of vape products online is a clear recognition by the government of the emerging health crisis brought about by vaping.

In a statement, Health Justice said the decision of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is clear proof the government is aware of the threat of vaping to public health.

“This is a recognition by the government of the prevailing health crisis brought about by lenient regulations on vapes,” said Health Justice.

Last Friday, the DTI issued an order temporarily suspending the sale, advertising, and distribution of vape products online.

The DTI said the order was prompted by the need to prevent the sale of vape products to minors and ensure products being sold online comply with the safety standards set by law.

Health Justice said they are hoping the suspension would eventually lead to the online selling of vape products being banned in the country.

“Health Justice believes that there should be a total ban on online selling of vapes and heated tobacco products,” it said.

The group also said the government may also adopt additional measures that can help the public, especially the youth, avoid such products.

“The government can enforce a ban on flavored e-cigarettes, implement a crackdown on advertisements targeting minors, and, regulate its contents, such as nicotine and vape additives,” it said.

Health Justice said the DTI should closely coordinate with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on how to further respond to the health crisis brought by vaping.
