Taal Volcano vog alert up anew

MANILA, Philippines — Volcanic smog or vog was observed around Taal Volcano anew starting at 2 p.m. yesterday.

Citing a report by the Batangas Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the areas affected by vog are Agoncillo, Laurel, Balete, Sta. Teresita, Calaca, Mabini, Mataasnakahoy, Lemery, San Nicolas and Talisay.

Phivolcs said 6,837 tons of sulfur dioxide were recorded on Monday.

Vog was reported around the volcano last month due to an increase in sulfur dioxide emission.

Phivolcs said vog consists of fine droplets of volcanic gas, which is acidic and can cause irritation to the eyes, throat and respiratory tract, with severities depending on gas concentrations and duration of exposure.

“People who may be particularly sensitive to vog are those with health conditions such as asthma, lung disease and heart disease, the elderly, pregnant women and children,” the agency said.

Phivolcs advised the public to take the necessary precautions to limit exposure to vog.

“Avoid outdoor activities, stay indoors and shut doors and windows to block out vog,” it said.

The public is advised to cover their nose, preferably with an N95 mask, and drink plenty of water to reduce throat irritation or constriction.
