Workers party eyes coalition for 2025 polls

AHEAD of the 2025 midterm elections, the Workers’ Party Philippines (WPP) yesterday said it is looking to form coalitions with other like-minded groups with an aim to advance the rights and conditions of workers.

In a statement, WPP president lawyer Sonny Matula said they are eyeing alliances with other political parties to ensure that it will achieve its goals.

“The WPP is committed to advancing its labor-focused agenda while building broad coalitions that prioritize the welfare of the Filipino people,” said Matula.

“To make real change, we need to ally ourselves with other parties that share our vision for uplifting Filipino workers and the marginalized,” he added.

Matula said the WPP is currently in talks with the Liberal Party, the Philippine Democratic Socialist Party, the Bagumbayan Party, as well as the Public Services Labor Independent Confederation (PSLINK) and Muslim leaders in Mindanao.

“This move underscores the party’s commitment to representing diverse communities across the country, where the voices of workers and marginalized sectors must be heard,” said Matula.

The labor leader also said the WPP is finalizing its legislative agenda, including advocating for trade union organizing, collective bargaining, and advancing social legislation such as increasing the minimum wage by P150 nationwide towards a living wage, ending contractualization/endo, and enhancing social protection for workers.
