4 children suffer firecracker injuries – DOH

MANILA, Philippines — Four children became the first victims of firecracker-related injuries nine days before the New Year’s Eve celebration, the Department of Health (DOH) announced yesterday.

In its “Iwas Paputok” Report, the DOH said four boys aged 6-13 were injured due to the use of firecrackers, which were classified as illegal by the government.

“The fireworks injuries were caused by illegal boga, 5-star and piccolo,” the DOH noted.

It then called on the different stakeholders – the police, local leaders, traders, parents and all the national government agencies – to come together and help address the issue of firecracker use.

“We must stand firm to eradicate the use of illegal fireworks. Our laws are there to protect against illegal fireworks. We should all protect our communities. We must unite to prevent injury and death due to fireworks,” said the health department.

Further, the DOH said parents must serve as guardians by supervising their children against firecracker use while setting the right example.

It also said that local governments and law enforcement units may help by cracking down on illegal firecrackers in their respective localities.

“Local governments and barangay leaders can contribute by organizing controlled fireworks displays, ensuring a joyful yet safe celebration for all,” added the DOH.
