4 killed, 6 hurt in Lapu-Lapu City firecracker warehouse blaze

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 11) — A fire that broke out in a firecracker warehouse in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu left four people dead and six others injured, the local government said Monday.

In a Facebook post, the city public information office said the fire started at around 1:35 p.m. inside the warehouse in Barangay Babag and quickly spread to nearby homes.

«Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard 'Ahong' Chan shared his sadness about a tragic incident in Barangay Babag involving the Berdin family and others,» it said.

The victims who were unable to escape the flames were: Chito Berdin, 58; Gwen Berdin-Lucero, 31; Arjay Escubia, 37; and Christian Monsant, 30.

At least six people suffered third-degree burns, including a seven-year-old child.

The local government said at least eight structures were affected. Damage was estimated at P300,000.

Chan said firecracker vendors can still display their products for the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations. However, he emphasized the importance of strict adherence to safety policies.
