Abby Binay slams ad changing street sign
MAKATI City Mayor Mar-len Abigail «Abby» Binay-Campos on Friday rebuked an advertising campaign that changes street signage along Gil Puyat Avenue, saying her office has not received any request for permit.
In a Facebook statement on Friday, Binay said she would have rejected right away any request for permission to change Gil Puyat Avenue's street signs.
«The city officials who issued the permit should have exercised prudence. They should have been more thorough,» she wrote.
Likewise, she said that she has reprimanded the officials responsible for issuing the permits to change the signs, which was changed from Gil Puyat to «Gil Tulog.»
Gil Puyat Avenue was named after former Senate president Gil Puyat, who served as senator from 1951 to 1972, and from 1967 to 1972.
«We must consider the disruption that might be caused to motorists and commuters. And respect for the family and the memory of the late Senate president Gil Puyat should be given due importance,» Binay said in Filipino.
She apologized to the family of the late Senate president and ordered the street signs to be taken down and the original street signs restored.
On Thursday, social media was abuzz with Makati street signs reading «Gil Tulog» instead of «Puyat» meaning lack of sleep.
An Instagram post (already deleted) from Wellspring brand said the temporary name change from «Gil Puyat» to «Gil Tulog» was part of a free jeepney ride campaign called «Sleepneys» that offers free rides from Guadalupe to Washington Street in Makati until Friday.
The special jeepney route starts from Guadalupe and ends at Washington Intersection, with Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue among the stops.
