Binondo roads closed for Chinese New Year

(UPDATE) MANILA, Philippines: The city government of Manila announced that some roads in Binondo will be closed to vehicular traffic due to Chinese New Year festivities that will start on Friday, February 9.

The Manila Chinatown Development Council said the New Year countdown will begin at 11:30 p.m.

Starting 12:01 a.m. on Friday, the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge will be closed to vehicles, the Manila Police said.

The southbound side of Jones Bridge will be closed starting at 7 p.m. and northbound side at 10 p.m.

Other roads that will be temporarily closed are the stretch of Quintin Paredes, from Padre Burgos Avenue to Dasmariñas Street, as well as Plaza Cervantes.

The Manila Police Traffic Bureau said the following rerouting scheme would be implemented:

Vehicles coming from Reina Regente Street on Juan Luna Street intending to utilize the southbound lane of Jones Bridge shall turn left to Plaza Lorenzo Ruiz, then turn right to Norberto Ty Street, right to Yuchengco Street, then left to Ongpin Street to point of destination.

Vehicles coming from Padre Burgos Avenue or Taft Avenue intending to utilize Jones Bridge shall go straight to McArthur Bridge or Quezon Bridge to point of destination.

Vehicles coming from Plaza Sta. Cruz utilizing Dasmariñas Street shall turn right to Q. Paredes Street to point of destination.

Vehicles coming from Magallanes Drive going to Binondo-Intramuros Bridge shall go straight to A. Soriano Avenue to Anda Circle to point of destination.

Vehicles coming from Muelle dela Industria going to Binondo-Intramuros Bridge shall take Madrid Street then turn right to San Fernando Street going to Plaza San Ruiz then left to Quintin Paredes Street, right to Norberto Ty Street, right to Yuchengco then left to Ongpin to point of destination.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority suspended the expanded number coding scheme on February 9, in line with Malacañang's proclamation declaring Friday a special non-working holiday throughout the country.

The city government said it will deploy 1,500 policemen to secure the Binondo area during the celebration of the Chinese New Year.
