Cardinals earn twice-to-beat edge
MANILA, Philippines — The Mapua Cardinals are going to the Final Four with a twice-to-beat advantage to boot.
This materialized after Mapua smashed University of Perpetual Help, 69-53, and San Beda edged St. Benilde, 65-61, yesterday in NCAA Season 99 at the Filoil EcoOil Arena.
The Cardinals claimed a spot to the semis even before yesterday but their recent win – their 13th in 16 games – coupled by the Lions’ unsuspecting assistance ensured the former of a top two finish and the important Final Four bonus that comes with it.
Clint Escamis was at the center of it all with 17 points, six steals, four rebounds, four assists and a block with no turnover.
It extended a season that was nothing short of spectacular and could hand Escamis the plum that every player aspires for – the MVP award.
Mapua captain Warren Bonifacio and Jopet Soriano also provided the added punch and contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.
San Beda claimed its ninth win against six defeats while staying in the Final Four hunt.
