Chavit's convoy accosted on EDSA

FORMER Ilocos Sur governor Luis «Chavit» Singson's convoy was flagged Monday by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) after they used the EDSA busway.

The former official was onboard one of the vehicles when it was given a ticket.

The MMDA said that they are simply enforcing the laws, regardless of who was caught.

MMDA special operations group — strike force head Gabriel Go said Singson did not resist the violation ticket and instead asked his driver to surrender his license.

Starting November 2023, motorists using the EDSA bus lane will face stiffer penalties of up to P30,000.

Under MMDA Regulation 23-002, the fines that will be imposed for both public and private vehicles are as follows:

First offense (P5,000); second offense (P10,000 plus one month suspension of driver's license, and required to undergo a road safety seminar); third offense (P20,000 plus one year suspension of driver's license); fourth offense (P30,000 plus recommendation to Land Transportation Office for revocation of driver's license).

Singson issued a public apology on his social media page, saying that the vehicle had no plate number but carries complete registration papers as it was newly made.

Singson also said he is giving P100,000 aside from the fine to the MMDA officials who gave the citation to their traffic violation.
