Chavit Singson files candidacy for senator

MANILA, Philippines — Former Ilocos Sur governor Luis «Chavit» Singson on Monday filed his certificate of candidacy (CoC) for senator.

Singson, who served as mayor of Narvacan town from 2019 to 2022, is running as an independent but expressed confidence that he would make it to the Magic 12 in the elections.

«Winning is a matter of awareness. I have already my programs and plans and once implemented I will surge in surveys,» he told reporters.

Singson said that he has two primary objectives in running for senator — to modernize the public transport system and establish the Bangko ng Masa to address the financial exclusion of thousands of Filipinos.

He said that he will use his own money to finance the production of thousands of electric jeepneys using South Korean technology.

«Qualified drivers need no down payment, no collateral, and there will be no interest,» the billionaire politician said.

The Bangko ng Masa, on the other hand, will cater to Filipinos who have no bank accounts, particularly overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

He vowed that once he is in office, «every single Filipino aged 18 and above, regardless of gender, region, religion or socioeconomic demographic, will be given a card and debit card.»

Singson ran for senator under Team Unity in 2007 but lost.
