DA celebrates 2024 World Milk Day

The Department of Agriculture, through the National Dairy Authority (DA-NDA), joins the nation in the observance of the World Milk Day by featuring the milk and dairy products of its supported dairy farmers from Northern and Southern Luzon at a dairy fair held at its Quezon City office on May 31, 2024.

Since 2001, the World Milk Day is celebrated annually on June 1. The celebration was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to highlight the importance of milk as a global food and to celebrate the dairy sector.

This year’s theme focuses on the crucial role dairy plays in providing quality nutrition to the world. Dairy products are accessible, affordable, nutrient-dense, and essential components of balanced diets globally.

Agriculture Undersecretary for Livestock Deogracias Victor B. Savellano, along with DA-NDA OIC-Administrator Atty. Gavino Alfredo C. Benitez, Dairy Confederation of the Philippines President Danilo V. Fausto, and Atty. Rhaegee Tamaña, who represented Senator Cynthia A. Villar, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

In his keynote address read by Usec. Savellano, Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. stated that the 2024 World Milk Day reaffirms the Department’s longstanding support for the dairy industry. He emphasized the vital role of the milk industry to the daily lives of farmers, stakeholders, and DA-NDA partners.

“Milk is often called nature’s perfect food. It is a powerhouse of nutrition. It is rich of calcium, protein, vitamins, and minerals that are essential in our growth and development. For children, it builds strong bones and teeth. For adults, it helps healthy bones and prevents osteoporosis. The benefits of milk are universal, it supports the health and well-being of people all ages,” Sec. Tiu Laurel said.

“Dairy farming is a 24/7 enterprise. Our dairy farmers work tirelessly to ensures steady supply of milk. Their dedication and resilience are commendable. Today, we pay tribute to their hard work and significant role in sustaining our agricultural economy,” he added.
